MACL Signs Agreement for Guraidhoo Airport Development

MACL has signed an agreement for the development of a new airport in Thaa Atoll Guraidhoo. The signing took place during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's visit to the atoll.

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has signed an agreement to develop a new airport in Thaa Atoll Guraidhoo, which will be the atoll’s third airport. The signing took place during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s tour, with Finance Minister Moosa Zameer signing on behalf of the government and MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed representing the company.

President Muizzu stated that the airport will be completed within 22 months and is expected to officially open on 26 July 2027, to coincide with the Independence Day. A land reclamation agreement for Guraidhoo was also signed on 26th of September 2025.

According to Guraidhoo Council President Thaufeeq Ali, the project represents the contentment of a long-standing aspiration of local residents.

Thaa Atoll's first airport, located in Thimarafushi was inaugurated in 2013 during former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed’s administration. Built by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the airport features a 1.200 metre runway and cost MVR 32 million.

A second airport for Vilufushi is currently under development, and the restoration work for Vilufushi airport began on 25th of September 2025. During his visit, President Muizzu also guaranteed several new development projects across Thaa Atoll.
