The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that the new passenger terminal at Hanimaadhoo International Airport will be inaugurated on November 9, marking a significant advancement in the northern region’s aviation infrastructure.
According to MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, final preparations are underway for the opening. He confirmed that airport operations will be moved to the new facility earlier this month to facilitate the demolition of the existing terminal.
Speaking with the local media, MACL Managing Director Shareef stated “We will begin operations from the new terminal this month, and the old terminal will then be demolished”.
A stakeholder briefing was held on Sunday to upgrade government agencies and partners on operational arrangement ahead of the transition.
Developed under an Indian line of credit and executed by Kalpataru Projects, the Hanimaadhoo Airport expansion stands among the Maldives’ largest aviation infrastructure projects. The USD 136 million (approximately MVR 2 billion) development features a 2.7 kilometre runway capable of handling larger aircrafts, a new passenger terminal designed to accommodate up to 1.3 million passengers annually, a modern air traffic control tower, cargo facilities, and a fuel farm.
The project is financed through India’s USD 800 million Exim Bank line of credit and was initiated during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as part of a border effort to strengthen regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth across the northern atolls.
Once operational, the upgraded Hanimaadhoo International Airport is expected to greatly enhance air connectivity between the Maldives and international destinations, fostering increased tourism and trade opportunities in the region.
