The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has been awarded the contract to dredge Maafaru Falhu and transform it into a modern urban centre.
Representing the government, Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer signed the agreement, while MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed signed on behalf of the company.
Dredging work at Maafaru Falhu has now been officially commended. The lagoon, located between Mahibadho and Omadhoo islands in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, was placed under the jurisdiction of Mahibadhoo Island Council in April last year. The council is tasked with incorporating community input into the master plan for the area.
The government has designated seven locations across the Maldives for urban development: Ungoofaaru (Raa Atoll), Eydhafushi (Baa Atoll), Naifaru (Lhaviyani Atoll), Mahibadhoo (Alifu Dhaalu Atoll), Nilandhoo (Faafu Atoll), Kudahuvadhoo (Dhaalu Atoll), and Fonadhoo (Laamu Atoll).
