The Maldives Airports Company Limited has successfully reclaimed 27 hectares of land on Veymandoo Island in Thaa Atoll, completing the main sand-filling phase in just 23 days to help address the island’s chronic housing shortage for its 1,300 residents. Approximately 882,693 cubic metres of sand were used, and the project was officially completed on 4 April. The next phase focuses on coastal protection, including the installation of boulder revetments.

Beyond providing additional housing, the reclaimed land forms the foundation of a broader regional development plan. This includes a proposed causeway connecting Veymandoo to the nearby Kin’bidhoo Island, paving the way for the development of the uninhabited Elaa Island into a tourism destination.

The island’s physical expansion is accompanied by significant municipal upgrades. These include comprehensive road networks and a new mosque accommodating 500 people. Social infrastructure will also be enhanced through the establishment of a modern 50-bed hospital and a state-of-the-art sports complex with a capacity of 1,200. Collectively, these projects aim to strengthen Veymandoo’s role as a key administrative and community hub for Thaa Atoll.
