The Housing Development Corporation on Sunday commenced construction of a new sports park in Phase I of Hulhumalé in response to a long standing shortage of recreational spaces for children. The groundbreaking ceremony was led by Managing Director Brig Gen Retired Ali Zuhair together with Members of Parliament Abdulla Shazeem representing Central Hulhumalé and Hussain Shareef representing North Hulhumalé.
The park is being developed on a site opposite the Container Park and is expected to be completed within four months. The facility will include an artificial turf futsal pitch and a three on three basketball court while incorporating the existing community volleyball court. The design is intended to strengthen current recreational activities while expanding opportunities for public use.
The development was initiated following a concern raised by a resident about the lack of safe play areas in the neighbourhood. As a gesture of appreciation the corporation invited the resident to take part in laying the foundation stone. The project highlights the corporation’s continued focus on improving sports infrastructure across Hulhumalé.
