Gemanafushi is undergoing a major transformation as the Road Development Corporation Limited (RDC) begins upgrading five of the island’s main roads.
The project, which officially commenced on 18 March, focuses on enhancing connectivity and infrastructure across the island’s administrative and industrial areas.
The comprehensive initiative includes paving with zigzag interlocking blocks, installing street lighting, creating tree pits, constructing drainage canals, and integrating junctions designed for future service cable installations.
A key feature of the upgrade is a modern stormwater management system, aimed at addressing the island’s longstanding flooding challenges. Additional improvements include carbstone pathways, strategically placed road signs, and general paving work to enhance safety and accessibility.
With a total investment of USD 4.94 million, the project highlights a commitment to modern, resilient infrastructure. RDC is also leading similar road improvement efforts across multiple atolls, prioritizing sustainable solutions over traditional tarmacking. These designs focus on local conditions, strengthening sand roads and improving flood resilience, especially in islands that rely on tourism.
