The reclamation of land designated for the development of Dhidhdhoo Airport has been successfully concluded, marking a major step forward in strengthening aviation infrastructure in the northern Maldives. The milestone signals the transition from groundwork to the next phase of development for a project expected to enhance connectivity across the region.

Reclamation works commenced on 4 January and were completed within 50 days. Operations were undertaken using the dredger Leiv Eiriksson, a high-capacity vessel capable of transporting up to 46,000 cubic metres of material per load. The newly reclaimed area will form the foundation for the airport’s construction and associated infrastructure.

The airport forms part of a broader national strategy to expand air transport services, with 15 new airports planned nationwide. Designed to improve accessibility and mobility, the Dhidhdhoo project is positioned to support economic activity, facilitate travel, and strengthen regional integration.

In addition to aviation infrastructure, sections of the reclaimed land have been earmarked for future residential and commercial development, creating opportunities for planned urban expansion. As the administrative and service hub of Haa Alifu Atoll, Dhidhdhoo already plays a central role in providing healthcare, education, and other essential services to neighbouring communities.

Home to approximately 16,000 residents across 14 inhabited islands, the atoll relies heavily on Dhidhdhoo as a focal point for services and commerce. While the island’s registered population stands at around 5,000, the actual resident figure is estimated to be closer to 7,000, reflecting its growing importance.

Upon completion, the airport is expected to serve not only Dhidhdhoo but also surrounding islands including Vashafaru, Filladhoo, Kelaa, Muraidhoo, Baarah and Utheemu. Currently, Hoarafushi Airport remains the sole aviation facility operating within the atoll.
