Work is progressing on the production of generator sets that will power the new Central Power Station planned for Addu City, according to Fenaka Corporation Limited Managing Director Mohamed Afeef Hussain. The project forms a key part of the government’s efforts to permanently address the electricity challenges that have affected the city for years. Afeef noted that significant progress is being made as authorities continue to push forward with plans aimed at improving the reliability of power services in Addu.
The development contract was awarded on 7 March to Definite Solutions, a Dubai-based company with extensive experience in delivering major infrastructure projects across West Asia. Since taking on the project, the company has committed to completing all works by the end of July next year and has assured stakeholders that construction will remain on schedule. Preparatory and administrative activities necessary for the project’s implementation are already underway.
A key feature of the new facility will be the introduction of advanced low-speed generator technology supplied by Belgium’s Anglo-Belgian Corporation. These engines will replace the high-speed systems currently used in Addu City, marking a major upgrade to the island’s power generation capabilities. Afeef stated that manufacturing activities at the supplier’s facilities are actively progressing, with efforts being made to ensure the project advances smoothly and without delays.
The power station project includes the construction of a dedicated powerhouse, the installation of five low-speed generators with a capacity of 5.2 megawatts each, the development of a fuel storage facility, and the establishment of bunkering services that will support electricity generation and distribution to the national grid.
Reflecting on the current situation in Addu, Afeef said he had personally witnessed the demanding conditions under which employees are working and acknowledged the ongoing risk of unexpected power interruptions. He emphasised that resolving the city’s electricity concerns remains a top government priority and assured residents that every effort is being made to accelerate the project and bring the new facility into operation as quickly as possible.
To prepare for the transition to the upgraded system, technical specialists from Belgium will conduct hands-on training programmes for Fenaka staff. The corporation expects that by the time the generators are delivered, installed, and commissioned, local personnel will have gained the necessary skills and expertise to operate and maintain the new equipment effectively, ensuring a smooth rollout of enhanced electricity services for the community.
