As the largest healthcare facility in the region, the hospital provides essential medical care to residents of Addu City while also serving as a referral hospital for neighbouring atolls during medical emergencies.

One of the largest projects currently in the pipeline is the construction of a dedicated private ward building. The facility is being developed to meet the growing demand for private inpatient accommodation and is funded through a USD 3.2 million design-and-build agreement financed by the Bank of Maldives.

The three-storey building will be constructed within the hospital compound and will include 10 private patient rooms, offering improved comfort and privacy for those requiring inpatient care.

In addition to the private ward project, development initiatives valued at approximately USD 9.7 million are progressing at various stages as part of the hospital's broader modernisation programme.

A further USD 1.29 million project will see the hospital's executive rooms upgraded to meet modern healthcare standards. The design phase has already been completed, paving the way for the next stage of development.

The hospital is also moving forward with plans to establish a hyperbaric chamber facility, which will provide specialised treatment for patients affected by decompression sickness, commonly known as "the bends." The addition is expected to be particularly beneficial given the prominence of diving activities throughout the southern atolls.

Alongside these infrastructure developments, AEH is expanding its therapeutic and specialised medical services while recruiting additional healthcare professionals to support the new facilities and accommodate the growing scope of services.

The ongoing expansion is expected to strengthen AEH's role as the primary healthcare provider for the southern region by improving access to specialised treatment closer to home. The enhanced services are anticipated to reduce the need for patients to travel to Malé for advanced medical care, helping ease both the financial burden and emotional strain often associated with seeking treatment away from their communities.
