In a strategic move to promote sustainable tourism in the Maldives’ northern atolls, the Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has been entrusted with the development of nature parks in two protected areas: Kelaakunu in Haa Dhaalu Atoll and Farukolhu in Shaviyani Atoll.

The agreement was officially signed by State Minister for Tourism and Environment, Mohamed Faiz, and MTDC Managing Director, Ahmed Niyaz, marking the beginning of a multi-phase project aimed at blending conservation with community-driven tourism.

Both Kelaakunu and Farukolhu are designated protected zones under the Environmental Protection and Conservation Act. The Ministry of Tourism and Environment affirmed that the upcoming nature parks will be designed and developed in strict adherence to this legislation, ensuring minimal ecological disruption.

The first phase of the project will focus on the foundational work: concept development, 3D visual renderings, an ecological baseline assessment, and the formulation of a detailed feasibility and management plan.

Speaking at the ceremony, State Minister Faiz emphasized the broader national agenda behind the initiative. “This project fulfills two key pledges of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu—to expand tourism across the northern atolls and to establish a nature park in every atoll,” he said. “While these sites are protected, eco-tourism will be developed with full respect for their ecological integrity. The local communities stand to benefit significantly.”

MTDC Managing Director Niyaz confirmed that once the concept is finalized, ground-level activities will commence immediately. “Our focus is to ensure that development is environmentally responsible. This initiative not only supports the tourism sector but also safeguards our natural heritage,” he said, adding that preparatory work is scheduled to begin as early as next week.
