The Government of the Republic of Maldives, through the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy (MCCEE), has launched the 'Building Climate Resilient Safer Islands in the Maldives' (BCRSI) project. This initiative is funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and co-financed and supervised by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project aims to transform traditional coastal protection methods by shifting towards a more sustainable and nature-based approach. Instead of relying solely on artificial structures, the focus will be on maintaining the natural resilience of sandy beaches and coral reefs. By implementing Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), the project will work towards reducing land loss, strengthening disaster preparedness, and ensuring the safety of communities living along the coast.

One of the main objectives of the BCRSI project is to improve the long-term resilience of the Maldives against climate change. The project promotes sustainable economic development while ensuring that coastal ecosystems are properly managed. This includes protecting coral reefs, beaches, and coastal vegetation to strengthen the islands' natural defenses. A combination of nature-based solutions and engineered interventions will be used to safeguard coastal areas while ensuring that development remains environmentally responsible.

The project consists of four key components. First, it seeks to establish an Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) framework to coordinate and guide coastal management efforts. Second, it will implement various conservation and protection measures that incorporate both nature-based and engineered solutions. Third, a disaster warning and information dissemination system will be developed to ensure that communities receive timely alerts and guidance. Lastly, a system for collecting and sharing climate-related data will be introduced to improve decision-making and planning.

As part of the initiative, a training program on sustainable coastal protection measures was recently conducted. On January 22, 2024, participants of this program presented individual action plans outlining specific steps for coastal conservation. These plans included timelines, potential challenges, and expected outcomes. The session was attended by MCCEE's Coastal Section staff and other technical experts, who engaged in discussions to refine strategies for successful implementation.

The BCRSI project represents an important step towards ensuring the Maldives’ coastal resilience. By prioritizing nature-based solutions and comprehensive management strategies, the project aims to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change while promoting sustainable development. Through collaboration between government agencies, experts, and local communities, the initiative seeks to create long-lasting solutions that protect both people and the environment.
