A Vision for a Climate-Resilient Maldives
Gaafaru, an island in the Kaafu Atoll, faces a critical threat from rising sea levels and coastal degradation. Partnering with the Maldives Fund Management Corporation (MFMC), Foster + Partners has unveiled a sustainable masterplan to transform Gaafaru into a model for climate adaptation and economic resilience.
With half the island at risk of submersion in the next century and social inequalities widening between locals and high-end tourism, this visionary project aims to protect the environment, create economic opportunities, and ensure long-term sustainability.
The Six Pillars of Gaafaru’s Transformation
1. Adapting to Rising Seas
The plan includes sustainable land reclamation using low-impact techniques, elevating at-risk areas to prevent flooding for the next century. Green buffer zones with native vegetation will protect the island from extreme weather.
2. Minimizing Environmental Damage
Compared to conventional methods, land reclamation will be reduced by 45% to limit ecological destruction. Floating platforms and 3D-printed modules will serve as innovative sustainable alternatives.
3. Protecting Marine Ecosystems
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) will conserve vital habitats and species, while a marine research institute will educate visitors, encourage research, and promote reef restoration.
4. Economic Growth for Locals
Unlike traditional resort developments, this plan ensures locals benefit from economic growth. Floating platforms will feature renewable energy hubs, food production, and marine services, reducing reliance on imports.
5. Bridging Locals and Tourism
A mobility network will connect local areas with new resorts, integrating tourists into the community. Guesthouses and recreational parks will provide economic and social opportunities for locals.
6. Net-Zero Energy, Water, and Waste
- Floating solar farms will generate renewable energy.
- Hydroponic farming and greenhouses will ensure local food production.
- Water recycling systems will reuse greywater for irrigation and sanitation.
- Circular waste management will reintegrate byproducts into the island’s economy.
Foster + Partners’ leadership emphasized the project’s impact:
Luke Fox, Head of Studio:"This project offers a sustainable approach to climate resilience, ensuring Gaafaru’s long-term survival."
Tony Miki, Partner:"We’ve taken a holistic approach, embedding sustainability and social equity into every aspect of the masterplan."
If successful, Gaafaru’s master plan could set a precedent for other island nations, proving that climate resilience and economic prosperity can go hand in hand. By blending innovation with sustainability, the Maldives is paving the way for a greener future.
