A dedicated Calm Room has been established at Terminal 1 of Velana International Airport to support passengers with non-visible disabilities, offering a more comfortable and accommodating travel experience.

The initiative forms part of the broader social responsibility efforts by Maldives Airports Company Limited, aimed at improving accessibility and strengthening support services for individuals with special needs. It reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to creating a more inclusive airport environment.
The official opening ceremony was led by MACL Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed. Representatives from the Maldives Autism Association, Autism Care Maldives, and MACL were also present at the event.

Developed under MACL’s “BOLI” initiative, the Calm Room draws inspiration from similar accessibility-focused airport spaces around the world. It is designed as a quiet, low-sensory environment intended to ease stress and reduce overstimulation commonly experienced in busy travel settings. The room is equipped with sensory aids and activities to help passengers feel more settled and supported. Parents or guardians are allowed to accompany users inside the facility. In addition, eligible passengers will be provided with a special identification card and lanyard to ensure quicker recognition and smoother assistance throughout the airport.
Through this development, MACL aims to further enhance inclusivity and ensure a more welcoming and passenger-friendly experience for all travellers passing through the airport.
