Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded a contract by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) to construct a 100-metre quay wall and carry out paving works at the new port development area in Thilafushi.
The agreement was signed by MPL Chief Executive Officer Captain Hussain Shafeeq and MTCC Managing Director DCP (Retd) Ahmed Saudi. The project includes the construction of the quay wall and 6,775 square metres of paving works along with related infrastructure. The area will initially be used for cargo clearance operations. This will allow a gradual relocation of sea cargo activities currently handled at the Malé Commercial Harbour and the Hulhumalé International Terminal, which will help ease congestion and improve efficiency in clearance processes.

After the completion of the wider Thilafushi Port Development Project, the same area will be repurposed as a service quay for MPL vessels.
The quay wall component of the project is valued at USD 1.17 million. The total project cost, including paving works and related infrastructure, is valued at USD 10 million. The work is expected to be completed within 120 days.

MPL has stated that development of the new international port at Thilafushi is progressing at a steady pace. The port is planned to open in November 2027, at which point operations will be transferred from the Malé Commercial Harbour to the new facility.
Earlier this year, China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) was awarded the contract for design and survey works for Phase I of the project. MPL confirmed that this phase is now nearing completion.
