Survey and assessment work has officially begun as part of the project to modernise the road networks in Male' and Villimale', marking an important step forward in improving urban infrastructure in the capital region.
The large-scale initiative is being funded through grant assistance provided by the Government of China and is expected to bring significant upgrades to existing road systems.

Originally planned to be financed through domestic budget allocations, the project later secured Chinese grant support following discussions between the two governments during an official visit. This shift in funding enabled the initiative to move ahead on a broader implementation framework.

The agreement between both sides was formalised in October last year through the signing of a letter of exchange, which initiated the design and planning phase of the project. Under this arrangement, Chinese authorities are responsible for overseeing project coordination, including procurement processes and the appointment of contractors for construction works.

Technical teams are currently carrying out detailed field surveys and engineering assessments required for the development of final designs and construction specifications. These studies include evaluations of existing infrastructure conditions across the targeted areas, with on-site inspections and stakeholder consultations continuing until 4 June.
Beyond road resurfacing, the project takes a comprehensive approach to urban infrastructure development. Planned upgrades include improvements to water supply and sewerage systems, electrical networks, stormwater drainage, and fire hydrant infrastructure across Male' and Villimale'.
