Hanimaadhoo International Airport Set To Open By November

President of Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the international airport being built in Haa Dhaalu.Hanimaadhoo nears completion and is set to be operational and completed by November this year.

He also outlined the development of this airport as one of the most significant projects for the island. Speaking with the people of the island, the president mentioned that the airport's development was advancing rapidly, with many facilities of the airport being developed. According to Regional Airports Company Limitedfa (RACL) 91 percent of the project has already been completed.

Major components of the airport, such as the Air Traffic Control tower, cargo building, hangar taxiway, and other basic amenities have reached 99 percent completion, along with the passenger and jetty terminals being 92 percent completed.The new terminal designed with Maldivian architectural features, covering 10,380 square metres, will feature the first aerobridge in the atolls.

Once the development of the project is completed, Hanimaadhoo Airport will be able to serve A320 and Boeing 737 flights, while the apron can accommodate up to nine flights at once. While being able to park three Airbuses and six ATR aircraft at a time. Once fully functional the passenger capacity of the airport is estimated to be at 1.3 million passengers annually. The lower floor of the terminal will be used for domestic flights while the upper floor will be used for international flights, along with two gates on each floor.

The project is to be valued at USD 129.7 million, and is expected to transform connectivity for northern atolls.

President Muizzu also explicitly stated that, since Hanimaadhoo Airport will be an International Airport, arrangements for local passengers will be made so then they can purchase US dollars at bank rate while departing from the airport, similar to services available at Velana International Airport. Additionally, a US dollar ATM will be installed outside the airport, alongside Bank of Maldives and Maldives Islamic Bank Rufiyaa Atms in Hanimaadhoo.

He further stated that Hanimaadhoo Council will soon start issuing passports and national identity cards on the island, by the time the airport is opened.

President Muizzu also met with Hanimaadhoo Island Council, the Women's Development Committee (WDC), and heads of local institutions to discuss the island's most critical development concerns. Following the meeting, he had also met the local residents of the island. Speaking with them he confirmed the construction of housing, healthcare, and road development projects within the island to support the island's anticipated growth once the airport comes into operation.

With the development nearing completion, the Hanimaadhoo International Airport is set to emerge as a key gateway for the Northern Atolls of Maldives, enabling new opportunities for tourism, trade, and regional development.
