The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has extended an additional loan of AED 147 million (USD 40 million) to accelerate the development of Velana International Airport in the Maldives.  As the main gateway to the country, Velana International Airport plays a vital role in supporting the tourism sector, which is the backbone of the Maldivian economy. The ongoing expansion project reflects the country’s efforts to enhance connectivity, improve passenger experiences, and meet the growing demands of international travel.

The development project focuses on expanding the airport’s infrastructure to accommodate up to 26 gates for passenger access to aircraft and the construction of a dedicated building for international flights. These upgrades are designed to significantly boost the airport's capacity and enhance connectivity, providing critical support for the Maldives’ growing tourism sector and overall economic development. At the official signing ceremony, attended by representatives from both nations, the financing agreement was signed by Mr. Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of ADFD, and Mr. Moosa Zameer, Maldives’ Minister of Finance.

“This funding reflects ADFD's commitment to fostering economic and social development through transformative infrastructure projects,” said Mr. Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi. “The expansion and modernization of Velana International Airport will meet the rising demand from tourism while opening new economic opportunities for the Maldives.”

Maldives’ Minister of Finance, Mr. Moosa Zameer, expressed gratitude to ADFD for its continued support, emphasizing the project's significance for national growth. “The funding will help create a state-of-the-art international airport with world-class services and technologies, marking a milestone in enhancing our transport infrastructure, elevating the travel experience, and boosting tourism revenues – key pillars of our economy,” he stated.

The project also focuses on enhancing the airport’s ability to handle larger aircraft by building a new runway. This will enable the airport to welcome a broader range of airlines and open new routes, thereby strengthening its position as a key aviation hub in the region. Additional upgrades include improvements to passenger amenities, lounges, and retail spaces, ensuring comfort and convenience for travelers, as well as enhanced cargo facilities to support trade and logistics.

This expansion is a significant step toward meeting the growing demands of the tourism sector, which is central to the Maldivian economy. By increasing the airport’s capacity and modernizing its operations, the Maldives aims to attract more visitors, encourage investment, and provide opportunities for sustained economic growth. Velana International Airport is not only a gateway for travelers but also a symbol of progress and development for the nation.

Velana International Airport's expansion aligns with broader goals of sustainable infrastructure development, strengthening the Maldives’ position as a leading global tourist destination.
