A Letter of Exchange has been signed between the government of Maldives and the People’s Republic of China for the development of office buildings for 50 local island councils. At a ceremony held on 22nd May 2025, the Letter of Exchange was signed by the Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, and the Ambassador of China, H.E. Mr. Kong Xianhua.
During the event, Minister Dr. Muththalib said that the Letter of Exchange was signed in response to a proposal made by the Government of Maldives to the Chinese Government. Additionally, the Minister stated that the project will be carried out by the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works.
The project aims to develop modern and spacious new offices in place of aged buildings to combat the lack of space in government offices across islands. As per the agreement, China will provide fundings for buildings across 50 local islands. The project will be carried out in two phases, the first phase involves construction of 30 civic bodies, while the second phase involves construction of 20 buildings.
Mr. Kong Xianhua stated that a technical team from China will arrive soon to conduct feasibility studies for the project. According to him, once the project is completed, the local population will greatly benefit from it.
