A major milestone has been reached in the Greater Malé Connectivity Project, as the piling work for the Thilamale Bridge has been successfully completed, according to the Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Minister announced that the most technically demanding phase of the project—piling—has now concluded. A total of 263 piles were installed across 68 strategic onshore and offshore locations.
“The piling work for the Thilamale Bridge has been successfully completed, marking the most challenging phase of the project. A total of 263 piles were installed across 68 onshore and offshore locations. With this milestone achieved, the project has now reached 60.84% completion,” he tweeted today.
The Thilamale Bridge, formally part of the Greater Malé Connectivity Project (GMCP), is set to be the largest and most ambitious infrastructure initiative in Maldivian history, aiming to link Malé, Villimalé, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi. The bridge is expected to ease daily commutes, reduce inter-island travel time, and support economic development across the greater capital region.
The project is being implemented with the support of the Government of India and is being constructed by Afcons Infrastructure, a leading Indian engineering firm. It is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2026.
