Today, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has signed an agreement with Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) to commence the construction of an airport in R. Fainu. The agreement was signed by Ahmed Saudi, Managing Director of MTCC, and Ibrahim Shareef, Managing Director of MACL.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had announced that the R. Fainu airport construction project would be awarded to MTCC during his visit to the island on 23^rd January 2025. He also stated that the project would begin very soon. In 2024, President Dr. Muizzu promised to build an airport in R. Fainu along with numerous other infrastructure projects.

Currently, Ifuru Airport is the only airport in the northern part of R. Atoll. In the southern part of the atoll, R. Alifushi Airport development work is also in progress.
