India has successfully completed three major development projects in Addu City, Maldives, under its Line of Credit facility. These projects include land reclamation, beach protection, and the construction of the Hankendi Bridge, all of which are expected to enhance infrastructure, boost economic activity, and improve the quality of life for residents.

The land reclamation project has expanded Addu City by approximately 184.3 hectares. This includes 80 hectares in Hithadhoo, 76 hectares in Maradhoo, and 3.3 hectares in Feydhoo. Additionally, three new islands, covering a total of 8.3 hectares, have been created and designated for tourism development. The newly formed islands have already been officially named by the Addu City Council.

In addition to land expansion, the Addu Beach Protection Project has been completed, safeguarding seven kilometers of the city's coastline. This initiative is crucial for preventing erosion, ensuring sustainable tourism, and addressing housing needs by creating more habitable areas. The protection of coastal areas is expected to contribute to long-term economic stability and attract further investments in tourism.

The Hankendi Bridge is another significant addition to Addu City's infrastructure. Developed as a four-lane detour link road in the southwest of Hankendi Island, the bridge aims to improve connectivity within the city. The project, which began in 2021, is part of a broader effort to enhance transportation and accessibility in the region, benefiting both residents and businesses.

Following the completion of these projects, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Hankendi Integrated Tourism Development Project. This ambitious initiative aims to develop 1,041 rooms with a capacity for 2,082 tourist beds, positioning Addu City as a key player in the Maldives' tourism industry. The project is expected to attract more visitors and generate employment opportunities, further strengthening the local economy.

The contracts for these projects were awarded to AFCONS, an Indian company also responsible for the construction of the Thilamale’ Bridge. The total value of the development projects is estimated at USD 77.23 million. These initiatives highlight the growing collaboration between India and the Maldives, reinforcing their commitment to regional development and mutual prosperity.
